Roosevelt, EdithEdith Kermit Carow was born on August 6, 1861, in Norwich, Connecticut, to Charles and Gertrude Elizabeth Tyler Carow. Her father's bouts with alcoholism and her mother's retreat into hypochondria robbed Edith of a happy childhood in her own home. However, the Carows and Roosevelts were neighbors, and Edith joined the four Roosevelt children in instruction in their home. Edith and Theodore Roosevelt knew one another and were friends throughout their childhood, while Edith considered Theodore's sister Corinne her best friend.
