U.S. Presidents & Presidency: Van Buren

A topic guide covering the Presidents of the United States. This is an ongoing project. As such, additional individuals will be added over time.

Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren served as the eighth president of the United States from 1837 - 1841. Prior to the presidency, he served as vice president and secretary of state under Andrew Jackson.

Van Buren owned "at least one enslaved person during his lifetime" and used enslaved labor during his time in the White House (White House History). He opposed the idea of abolishing slavery. "He argued that 'Congress has no right to interfere in any manner, or to any extent, with the subject of slavery in the States'” (White House History).

Van Buren died on July 24, 1862.
