Zachary Taylor served as the 12th president of the United States from 1849 to 1850. Prior to the presidency, he served as a general in the United States Arm during the Mexican-American War and the War of 1812.
As president, "Taylor opposed the expansion of slavery into new territories. However, he also brought enslaved individuals to the White House" (White House History).
Taylor died in Washington, D.C. in 1850.
