Nexis Uni: Navigating and Using Nexis Uni (Formerly LexisNexis Academic): Law Cases

Database guide covering how to search for content in Nexis Uni.

Law Research

After running a search, you can narrow your results using post search filters.

The following is a list of items to keep in mind when using any of the filters available under Filters:

  • The service does not include the same filters for all categories, except for Search Within Results.
  • Some filters only display if all the results in your current results list meet that particular criteria. For example, if your results include documents like statutes, regulations, or treatise sections, the Timeline filter is not displayed because those documents do not include dates. You must apply other filters to remove those documents from the current results list before the Timeline filter is displayed.

Law Reviews and Journals

In addition to Search Within Results and Source, you can use the following filters in Law Review and Journals.

  • Category - select a type such as Law Reviews and Journals or Treatises.
  • Jurisdiction - select U.S. Federal, individual states, and international jurisdictions.
  • Note: For the Timeline filter and sorting, the service converts general Law Review and Journal dates to a specific month, day and year. For example, December translates to December 1. Fall 2012 or Summer 2012 translates to January 1, 2012.
  • Sources - narrow results to specific sources
  • Practice Areas & Topics - topics covered in the results.
  • Attorney - attorneys listed as the author of the documents.
  • Law Firm - law firms listed as the author of the documents.
  • Most Cited - citations cited in the results.

Click More in any filter to display the following maximum number of choices within the specific filter:

  • No limit for the Court and Publisher filters
  • 10 for the Practice Areas & Topics filter
  • 20 are displayed for the Judge, Attorney, and Law Firm filters, but you can search within all the available choices
  • 20 for all other filters

Because names of attorneys, law firms, and judges may be listed multiple ways on court documents, the system displays normalized entries in the Attorney, Law Firm, and Judge filters. For example, the Attorney filter displays Paul D. Clement, but the documents may list him as Paul Clement or Paul D. Clement. When using the Search feature within the Attorney and Judge filters, a search for firstname lastname is suggested. When using the Search feature within the Law Firm filter, start with 1 name from the firm.

For filters to appear in the results set, all documents in the results set must have the criteria for the filter. For example, for the Timeline filter to appear, all documents must have a date. When you run a search in an individual source with dates, you may still need to select the category under Filters > Category to activate the Timeline filter.

Cases

In addition to Search Within Results, Source, and Timeline you can use the following filters in Cases:

  • Court - select a court level or specific court.
Note: When you select a Jurisdiction filter before running your search, any selection you make is reflected in the results under the Court filter.
  • Timeline - ability to add a date restriction.
  • Practice Areas & Topics - topics covered in the results.
  • Publication Status - narrow the results by whether the case is Reported or Unreported, or for California cases, Published or Unpublished. For additional information, see Publication Status Filter in Cases.
  • Attorney - a list of attorneys from the COUNSEL field.
  • Law Firm - a list of law firms from the COUNSEL field.
  • Most Cited - citations cited in the results.
  • Keyword - keywords within the results. Identified keywords must appear at least 5 times in the document.
  • Judge - a list of judges that appear in the JUDGES segment.
