- Africans in the Spanish ColoniesAfricans took a variety of social roles in 17th century Spanish colonies. Many Africans, slave and free, lived in Spanish port cities and were involved in colonization. Indigenous people and slaves occasionally revolted in most Spanish colonies, and some Africans chose to fight with the Spanish while others took the opportunity to escape. Africans who spoke fluent Spanish and adopted Spanish behavior were called ladinos, and they were usually skilled laborers. Whether becoming pirates or serving as militia, Africans were a significant element in Spanish colonial society.

The contributors, leading experts in a range of fields, begin with an examination of the first and second Spanish periods. This was a time when La Florida was an elusive possession that the Spaniards were never able to completely secure; but Spanish influence would nonetheless leave an indelible mark on the land.
