Harriet E. Wilson (1828? - 1863?) was among the first African Americans to publish a novel in the United States. Her book, Our Nig; or, Sketches from the Life of a Free Black, in a Two-Story White House, North. Showing That Slavery's Shadows Fall Even There. By "Our Nig." discussed racism in the pre-Civil War North.
