VJ Day Celebrations Footage, 1945

 

Victory over Japan Day, known as VJ Day, marked the official end of the Second World War. Japan had put forth an offer of surrender on 10 August, but it took several days for the exact terms of the surrender to be agreed. When news of this initial offer broke, London took to the streets to celebrate. Japan publicly announced its surrender on 15 August 1945 and this day has since been commemorated. Millions of people across the world celebrated Allied victory over Japan in August and September 1945. The footage in this showreel includes scenes from London's celebrations as well as a parade through the streets of Hong Kong and celebrations in Toronto, Canada.

Celebrating the End of World War II

 

August 14 is #VJDay – the anniversary of America’s victory over Japan in World War II. The end of the war triggered huge celebrations, and two young women recall the jubilation in this video from our WWII exhibit “In This Great Struggle.”
