Research guide discussing copyright law, fair use, TEACH act, and public performance rights.

Obtaining Copyright Permissions

It is your responsibility as a researcher to get the appropriate permissions for all works that fall under copyright protections.

Contact the Copyright Holder

Contact the copyright holder to obtain permission. This person might be the original author or creator of the work or a publisher. When contacting the individual, be sure to include specific and detailed information regarding how you plan to use the material and the context for the use. Be sure to ask for specific requirements or limitations that the copyright holder might have for the material, including attributions.
