This guide includes a collection of recommended books, films, and online resources on anti-racism. What does it mean to be an anti-racist?
According to Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to be Anti-Raicst, "The opposite of racist isn't 'not racist.' It is 'anti-racist.' What's the difference? One endorses either the idea of a racial hierarchy as a racist, or racial equality as an anti-racist. One either believes problems are rooted in groups of people, as a racist, or locates the roots of problems in power and policies, as an anti-racist. One either allows racial inequities to persevere, as a racist, or confronts racial inequities, as an anti-racist. There is no in-between safe space of 'not racist.'"
This guide is by no means exhaustive and is limited to items that McKee Library has in our collection and can provide access too.
HEALING FROM HATE provides a riveting inside look at the bold work of the group Life After Hate - an organization founded by former skinheads and neo-Nazis who have dedicated themselves to transforming racist, white-supremacist attitudes. The film places special emphasis on Life After Hate's explicit engagement with issues of masculinity, giving voice to white men who say the primary reason they turned to hate groups was to validate their sense of manhood after experiencing a deep sense of inadequacy and shame. Healing From Hate is at once a stunning document of hatred, racism, and white male grievance in America, and a deeply human portrait of a group of people working together to de-radicalize White Nationalists and heal communities torn apart by white male rage, racial hatred, and division.
