Great Unsung Women of Computing

In the United States, women are vastly underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fields, holding under 25% of STEM jobs and a disproportionately low share of STEM undergraduate degrees. GREAT UNSUNG WOMEN OF COMPUTING is a series of three remarkable documentary films that show how women revolutionized the computing and Internet technology we use today, inspiring female students to believe that programming careers lie within their grasp.

Daring Women Doctors: Physicians in the 19th Century

At this crucial time when women physicians and nurses are contributing significantly to our community’s health, this documentary provides a look at the challenging and illuminating history of 19th century women doctors. Hidden in American history, all-women’s medical schools began to appear in the mid-19th century long before women had the right to vote or own property.

The Women's Movement

In the late 1960s, the women's liberation movement came into being. The National Organization for Women campaigned successfully for the abolition of gender discrimination in employment. Attacks on sexism in advertising and media, and criticism of gender bias in society and law gave rise to radical feminism. Women campaigned in vain for the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution.

The Breast Cancer Diaries: A Young Mother's Struggle with Cancer

For ten years, Ann Murray Paige covered the news--but for the biggest story of her life she turned the camera on herself. When Murray-Paige, a former local news reporter and anchor, is diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 38, she sets up a diary camera in her bedroom. Ann's video diaries--raw and true--offer an intimate chronicle of a young mother's nine month journey with breast cancer, punctuated with humor and poignancy.

Living with Prostate Cancer

Being diagnosed with cancer is an emotionally challenging experience. Some people describe themselves as feeling “numb.” Others may feel sorrow, fear, anger, or even guilt if they believe their illness was caused by smoking or poor lifestyle choices. Learning about their condition can help patients have more control over the healing process. Cancer treatment has become sophisticated and complex and there are often several possible courses of action, so an informed patient is an essential participant in the decision-making process.

Cancer: Living with Bowel Cancer

Colorectal, or bowel cancer is a malignant tumour in the colon or rectum and usually occurs in middle and later life. Treatment is normally by surgical removal of the affected part of the colon or rectum. Adults with colorectal cancer face a number of issues, not least of which is overcoming a life-threatening illness. Living with bowel cancer is a difficult and emotional journey. This Speaking From Experience program offers offer first-hand accounts from people living with bowel cancer. They discuss the ways it has affected their lives. It was produced in partnership with the Cancer Council.
