Writing Assistance

The Writing Center offers free writing assistance to any current Southern student. Our staff, students trained in the writing process, will work one-on-one with you to help you develop the skills needed to become a confident and competent writer.

Each student is allowed one 30-minute session per day. Students with long assignments (ten pages or more) may request a 60-minute session. We encourage you to make an appointment before bringing in your work; however, walk-in sessions are welcome when space is available.

Bring your paper in at any stage, from brainstorming to the final draft. Our tutors are trained to help with essay writing, research papers, book reviews, article critiques, grammar, punctuation, and source citation (APA, MLA, and Chicago styles).

To best use our services, arrive on time to your appointment, bring a typed and printed copy of your assignment, along with your assignment sheet (if available), and be ready to ask specific questions. Plan ahead by making your appointment several days before your assignment is due; you will need time to make revisions, and you may want to return to the Writing Center with another draft. Have reasonable expectations. While you may want an A on your paper, our goal is to help you progress as a writer.
